The park today

The park pairs active recreation with a quiet pond. On the recreation side there are a baseball field, a basketball court and a renovated playground with swings (including toddler swings), multiple slides and a varied climbing structure; two paved lots provide parking. The pond itself provides habitat for ducks, other waterfowl and a range of plants and animals, with benches around it — a popular spot for watching wildlife.

In winter, when ice thickness and weather allow, the village opens the pond for ice skating; flags posted at the pond indicate whether skating is permitted (New York State guidance calls for at least six inches of ice). Like most village parks, Duck Pond Park is designated for village and school-district residents, who are expected to carry a Croton Recreation Photo ID.

History

Duck Pond Park is a neighborhood village park built around its namesake pond on Bungalow Road, in the southern part of Croton-on-Hudson near the Croton River's approach to the Hudson. The pond has long served the village as its outdoor ice-skating spot, a use the Recreation Department still manages each winter with a flag system indicating whether the ice is safe.

The pond's ecology drew formal attention in 2012, when a Croton-Harmon High School AP Environmental Science class produced a brochure on the pond's ecosystem that the village still distributes. The playground was fully renovated in 2015, giving the park its current climbing structure, swings and slides.

Ice skating

Ice skating on the duck pond is available in winter, weather and safety permitting. The village announces openings and uses a flag system at the pond to signal ice conditions; skating is only permitted when ice is confirmed safe.
