The park today
Today Spencer Field is the district's showcase outdoor athletic facility, home to Croton-Harmon Tigers football, soccer, lacrosse and track & field; the adjacent CET tennis courts share the 10 Gerstein Street campus. The district lists it alongside its other venues — the high school on Old Post Road South, the middle school on Glen Place, and the CET/Firefighter's/Manes field complex.
For everyone else, the district opens the field and track for scheduled community use from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on days when school is not in session, under posted rules: organized groups need a district permit, and the turf carries the usual protections — no food or drink except water, no pets, no metal cleats, no bikes, skateboards or motorized vehicles. Restrooms are closed in winter.
History
Spencer Field is Croton-Harmon Union Free School District property, not a village park, though it has functioned as shared community recreation space for decades. The village's recreation pages listed it as early as 2000 ("Football, Soccer, Track" at Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School, village residents only), and the village resident booklet has long noted that while the schools use the field for soccer and football, the track is available for residents' use.
The field was closed on June 10, 2024 for a district capital reconstruction — a project extensive enough to require rock blasting, which the village relayed community updates about. The rebuilt facility opened on September 11, 2025 as a synthetic-turf field ringed by a six-lane running track, with lights, bleachers, a press box, a concession stand and bathrooms.
