Sunset Park

The park today

The park sits between Lexington Drive and Sunset Drive and features a fenced-in play area, play structures and a large sandbox. The equipment is split between a toddler area (play house with slides, climbing ropes and a sand area) and a section for older children (slides, climbing structures, monkey bars and a bridge), plus swings, benches, picnic tables and a small grassy area. A Village Resident/School District Recreation Photo ID is required to use the park.

History

Sunset Park is a small residential-neighborhood playground that has served the blocks around Sunset and Lexington Drives for decades; the village's web site listed it as "Sunset Park Playground" as far back as 2000. In 2017 the village replaced the aging playground in a renovation reported at about $170,000. Unusually for the era, the new equipment kept the park's older character: wooden structures modeled on what the park previously housed, rather than brightly colored modern units. The new playground opened in June 2017.

About the name "Sunset Trail"

Sunset Trail is the name of a nearby residential street in the village — it appears in board records as a street address (for example, Board resolutions concerning properties at 8 and 9 Sunset Trail). It is not a walking trail in or connected to Sunset Park, and it is not part of the village's marked trail system.

No dedicated lot; street parking on the surrounding residential streets.

Between Lexington Drive and Sunset Drive, in a residential neighborhood south of the village center.

Rules

A Village Resident/School District Recreation Photo ID is required. Dogs are prohibited in village parks unless otherwise noted. Park facilities operate on the schedule posted at the facility (Village Code Chapter 168).
